Then come to this talk and let Caroline Spencer, fertility coach, ex-nurse, cognitive behavioural hypnotherapist and single mum to a donor conceived child, guide you through the decision making process. Having gone solo herself, Caroline now supports and mentors others through their decisions as well as being a trustee for the Donor Conception Network. In this talk she looks at your choices, how they relate to you, what you need to consider and outlines some of her own experiences. Sunday 14.30-15.15 Unknown donor vs Known donor vs Co-parenting Single women and lesbian couples looking to start a family face big issues from the outset when it comes to choosing a donor. Anonymity may seem like the simplest route but knowing more about a donor has its advantages, not least for those who want their child to have a relationship with its father. Fertility lawyer Nicola Scott of Natalie Gamble Associates looks at the practical and legal issues behind these decisions as well as the rights and responsibilities of the parties involved, whilst Erika Tranfield of Pride Angel, a website that facilitates and encourages conversations between donors and potential parents, offers an insight into the thinking and motivation of the people who connect via her site. Pride Angel at the Alternative Parenting Show 2014

The Alternative Parenting Show had another successful exhibition at the weekend. It provided a one-stop shop, which gave valuable information to same-sex and heterosexual couples and single men and women on how to make the dream of having a family a reality. In today's society families are made up of all different combinations, however this brings the need for fresh information. The show included advice from leading experts in their field on how to navigate through the minefield of having a child. Top areas included legal provisions, surrogacy, fertility, co-parenting, fostering and adoption. The one day event provided people with the opportunity to chat in an informal atmosphere to the experts who could give the answers needed. Pride Angel were delighted to have exhibited and enjoyed being able to answer the many questions asked about starting a family with the help of a known sperm or egg donor. Sunday 13.30-14.15 Surrogacy arrangements UK law says a surrogate mother is the child's legal mother and if she's married, her husband is the child's legal father, regardless of biology. This creates a range of complex legal issues and a lack of legal status for prospective intended parents in this fast evolving area of law and practice. As more people go abroad for surrogacy without any certainty they will be able to navigate a safe path home with their surrogate born child after the birth, cases of stateless and parentless children stuck in legal limbo hit the headlines. What is the legal pathway through domestic and international surrogacy? Louisa Ghevaert, a leading expert in fertility and parenting law and partner at UK solicitors Porter Dodson, goes through the issues. The Fertility show, London Olympia started today with many visitors arriving to discuss their infertility concerns and questions with the 100 exhibitors on show. Exhibitors included fertility clinics from within the UK, USA and Europe. Fertility support services, talked about alternative options to IVF, including natural fertility techniques, DuoFertility, Zestica along with Zita West vitamins and many more. Pride Angel was a popular stand today with many more visitors being interested in the opportunity of using known sperm or egg donors as a method of conceiving. Fertility clinics spoke with interest with Pride Angel, as they are seeing many more people taking known donors to clinics for fertility treatment.

Earlier this year, Channel 4 aired a controversial documentary called Google Baby which followed the journey of embryos, created in a United States fertility clinic from donor sperm and eggs, to India where they were implanted into local surrogates. Dr Gad Lavy who runs New England Fertility, the IVF clinic featured in the film, talks about what's involved in international surrogacy whilst Louisa Ghevaert, partner specialising in fertility and parenting law at UK solicitors Porter Dodson, discusses the complicated legal aspects involved with such arrangements.

Issues for families created with donors
If you are hoping to use donated sperm, eggs or embryos to start your family, then the issues of what, when and how to tell a child about their genetic origin becomes crucial. This can be even more complicated with the use of anonymous overseas donors. Olivia Montuschi who runs DC Network, an organisation of 1,500 families created with the help of donors, is joined by a donor conceived person to discuss being open with children in these cases.
